Group Motivation

Reading Time: 2 minutes

In the fitness world there has always been an element of people working in groups. Quite early in the fitness industry’s development story, exercise classes were a part of the landscape. This has evolved and progressed to the point where we have specialist providers of just group training emerging as some of the strongest brands on the planet. The recent float by F45 demonstrated the level of consumer demand for this type of product and confidence that it will continue to be a key offering.

What is motivation?

How do we define motivation, here at RISE we favour this description:

Motivation is the process that initiates, guides, and maintains goal-oriented behaviours. It is what causes you to act, whether it is getting a glass of water to reduce thirst or reading a book to gain knowledge. Motivation involves the biological, emotional, social, and cognitive forces that activate behaviour.

What sort of processes help motivate? A study on workers (Professor T Amabile and S Kramer Harvard 2010) decided to ask what motivates them

  • Recognition for good work
  • Interpersonal Support
  • Clear targets and goals
  • A sense of progress
  • Incentives and rewards

We can all recognise how fitness trainers use ‘shout outs’ in class and social media; that they set goals; brands give out t-shirts for prizes and peers often help motivate people. But when asked which was the most important, what came out on top? Those rated said that by far the most important was a sense of progress.

Progress in Fitness

How can we transfer this to the group fitness world? Well, here at RISE we view a sense of progress as very important in ongoing motivation. Remember that Weight Watchers has been successful for so long for a reason; the weekly scales, although some may view as crude, it is still a measurement that people can get their heads around.

The RISE product starts with a careful and in-depth discussion about what each member wants to achieve. But it is the use of regular check-ins and the Myzone heart rate monitor that allows the sort of data tracking that measures progress. Some of the data is easy for someone to understand but interpretation of this is best done by working with an expert coach, like the RISE trainers, to ensure full understanding.

If members understand their progress they are much more likely to stick with our programme. It follows on that the RISE product grows as something of value in the members’ lifestyle and so they are much less likely to leave.
