In the world of smart vehicle repairs, few stories capture the spirit of franchise success and personal freedom like that of Barry Hussey\u2019s. This year, Barry celebrated a remarkable achievement – raising his 10,000th invoice since adopting ChipsAway\u2019s bespoke CRM system in 2014. It’s a significant milestone in a journey that began back in October 2010, when he took the leap from being a Garage Manager to becoming a franchisee with ChipsAway.<\/p>\n

From Garage Floors to the Open Road<\/strong><\/p>\n

Barry’s roots in the automotive industry run deep. Aged just 16, he began his career in a Cambridge garage, cutting his teeth on tyres, exhausts, and MOTs. He progressed to become Manager of the busy workshop before deciding to pursue the independence and flexibility offered by running his own business. ChipsAway, with its reputation and support structure, proved to be the perfect fit.<\/p>\n

Initially launching as a \u201cman-in-a-van\u201d operation, Barry later expanded by opening a Car Care Centre \u2013 a fixed-base operation allowing him to handle larger repairs. Despite enjoying running the Car Care Centre, a mobile operation proved to work better for family life, and Barry enjoyed being out and about, so just before Covid-19 pandemic, he decided to return to mobile work – a move he hasn\u2019t looked back on.
\n\u201cI love the variety that comes with mobile work – different people, different places every day,\u201d Barry explains. \u201cIt gives me the freedom to manage my time around life and family, especially with five boys at home!\u201d<\/p>\n

Balancing Business and Family Life<\/strong><\/p>\n

Barry and his wife are parents to five boys, with their eldest recently turning sixteen. The flexibility of franchising has been instrumental in allowing Barry to be present for school activities, sports matches, and everyday family moments.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ability to build my workday around my life – not the other way around – is priceless,\u201d Barry adds. \u201cIt\u2019s one of the biggest benefits of running a ChipsAway franchise.\u201d<\/p>\n

This flexibility extends beyond family life. Barry is also an active volunteer with the Scout Association.<\/p>\n

\u201cVolunteering with the Scouts gives me a real sense of purpose \u2013 it\u2019s incredibly rewarding to help young people develop confidence, resilience, and practical \u2018skills for life\u2019 that they\u2019ll carry with them into adulthood. Whether we\u2019re camping in the wild or learning how to cook over a fire, I feel like I\u2019m giving something meaningful back to the next generation. It\u2019s not just about the activities – it\u2019s about mentoring, supporting, and watching them grow into capable, well-rounded individuals. That\u2019s what makes it so special. And I just don\u2019t think this would be possible with a more traditional 9-5 job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Collaboration and Camaraderie<\/strong><\/p>\n

Another key to Barry\u2019s long-term success has been the sense of community among ChipsAway franchisees. He frequently collaborates with neighbouring franchisee Jack Newman, who assisted him last year on his largest job to date – a \u00a31,250 repair that required a combined effort.
\n\u201cJack and I work really well together. We chat outside of work, share advice, and help each other out when needed. Even though you\u2019re your own boss, you\u2019re never truly on your own with ChipsAway.\u201d<\/p>\n

With 10,000 invoices under his belt in just over 10 years, he is a shining example of how dedication, support, and a flexible franchise model can create both financial success and a fulfilling lifestyle.
