Now into its 5<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0year, National Lorry Week celebrates the often overlooked role that lorries &#8211; and the road transport industry in general &#8211; play in our everyday lives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWithout the lorry, supermarket shelves would be empty, we&#8217;d soon be running short of petrol and UK industry would quickly grind to a halt,\u201d says Simon Johnston, Network Development Director, Driver Hire. \u201cAccording to the Road Haulage Association (RHA):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">98% of all goods consumed in the UK are transported by road,<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haulage and logistics provides jobs for 2.54m people making it the UK&#8217;s fifth largest employer,<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annually, the sector contributes \u00a3124bn of value to the UK economy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are around 600,000 goods vehicle licence holders in the UK and 524,500 commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes registered in the UK. \u201c<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organised by the RHA, along with Driver Hire, other partners are Goodyear (the tyre manufacturer) and Snap Account (a payment system for heavy goods vehicles).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSupport for national events is another element of the outstanding all-round support we offer our franchisees. They&#8217;re registering their support for \u2018National Lorry Week&#8217; through social media which all helps to raise their profile amongst clients and drivers.
