An interview with the former Home and Education Secretary, David Blunket commenting on the passing of Nelson Mandela on ChatPolitics was very informative. As an entrepreneur what struck the chord for me was his closing statement; “Don’t put anything in social media that you might regret in 20 years’ time”.

Whether we are a parent, spouse, or child, or your boss, team, co-worker, or business partner, your most important relationships are worth the time and care you put into them.

As a leadership coach and business consultant, I see the benefits of making your most important relationships a priority every single day. Great relationships can contribute to making working easier which leads to improved productivity. Business owners with deeply connected relationships cultivate trust and mutual respect.

Relationships take effort and hard work, but like anything important in our life, they’re well worth preserving.

Here are some facts about how social media is currently influencing our digital relationship;

  • Facebook – 1.59 billion users each month.
  • Instagram – 400 million users each month
  • Twitter – 320 million users each month
  • LinkedIn – 100 million users each month
  • You Tube – 2 billion users each month

Understanding what The Rt. Hon, the Lord Blunkett was implying about the nurturing and lasting nature of social media is staggering when you look at your customer journey now and in the future.

Our world is shrinking. We are thinking of the possibility that ‘The Six Degrees of Separation’ theory could be shorter now by up to almost 2 degrees.

In 2011, four students from Iran, the United States, and Canada collaborated on research to calculate the degree of separation between 1,500 random Twitter users. Their algorithms produced results in the range of just 3.4 to 3.8 for average degree of separation between users. That was seven years ago.

Based on these facts, social media demonstrates its contribution to the process of nurturing your relationship for doing business.
