Celebrating 30 years of Ovenu: A family legacy of excellence

This year, Ovenu proudly marks its 30th anniversary – a milestone that underscores its commitment to quality, reliability, and family values. Founded by managing director Rik Hellewell in 1994, it has grown from a singular vision into the UK’s largest network of oven cleaning specialists and a recognised and trusted brand.

Central to its success has been the involvement of two generations of the Hellewell family, ensuring the continuity crucial to securing another 30 successful years.

Marking the anniversary at Ovenu’s recent annual general meeting, Rik addressed almost 100 franchisees who had travelled from as far afield as the Channel Islands and Aberdeenshire: “Here’s to the next 30 years!”

He added: “We are not the only oven cleaning service out there, but in an often competitive market, Ovenu has succeeded in distinguishing itself by delivering exceptional service at a fair price – something clients really appreciate.”

While his entrepreneurial journey began more than three decades ago, Rik has always planned for the future. His wife Sue plays a pivotal role, managing front office administration and handling client enquiries. Meanwhile, the next generation of the Hellewell family is firmly immersed in the business – each bringing unique skills and a fresh perspective.

Son Paul, with 16 years of experience, runs his own franchise, Ovenu Camberley, and plays a crucial role in training new franchisees during their week-long induction course.

Youngest daughter, Shannon, leads Ovenu’s social media presence. Her innovative strategies and keen understanding of digital marketing have helped Ovenu reach a wider audience, engaging with clients in new and meaningful ways. Vikki, Rik & Sue’s eldest daughter, is another cornerstone of the business. She administers Ovenu’s crucial Customer Relationship Management system, ensuring franchisees receive the support they need to manage client relationships efficiently. Her technical prowess provides a robust backbone for the Ovenu network.

Rik said: “Sue and I have always believed in putting our clients first, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to see how our family values have shaped the business. Between us, we have many decades of collective experience and an unparalleled understanding of what makes a successful business. Having the family involved means we can maintain a personal touch in everything we do. It’s not just a business for us; it’s a part of who we are.

“The involvement of the next generation of our family ensures Ovenu is not just looking at immediate gains but is focused on long-term sustainability and growth. This forward-thinking approach guarantees that it will continue to thrive another 30 years and beyond.”

Rik’s inspiration for Ovenu came from a friend who had seen a mobile BBQ cleaning service while holidaying in New Zealand. As an apprentice-trained engineer, he produced a design registered heated dip tank for cleaning oven parts without harmful caustic soda.

He also created a trademarkable name, derived from “making an oven look like new.” After practicing on old ovens, Rik launched Ovenu in Wokingham, Berkshire. He spent five years perfecting and proving the business model and cleaning process before forming Ovenu Franchising Ltd in April 1999.

Rik, who in his time has personally cleaned more than 4,000 ovens, reflected: One of the biggest rewards of the past three decades is having supported hundreds of people in starting and growing their own businesses. I’m far from ready to retire, but knowing my family will continue the business is very reassuring. Their dedication and passion for Ovenu will ensure its legacy of quality and service continues well into the future.”
