Martin and Lisa Dowse have owned ComputerXplorers Sheffield since November 2021 and have used their differing experience and skills to their advantage to build their business successfully and sustainably.
Martin worked as a secondary school teacher for eight years before becoming a web developer for four years – providing him with the ideal background experience to then begin his ComputerXplorers business.
Once Martin had got classes up and running in March 2022 and the demands of the business began to grow, Lisa also came onboard to help provide extra support and another pair of hands. Lisa drew on her previous work in administrative roles and as a support worker in a special needs school to take on the admin, social media and class logistics side of the business, whilst Martin continued outreach to schools and teaching the classes. Their differing sets of skills complement each other perfectly and allow both to focus on their own areas of the business to ensure it continues to grow smoothly and successfully.
In fact, the only limitation they have come up against is ensuring their recruitment of staff keeps pace with the ever-growing list of classes and sessions being requested. In particular, Martin and Lisa have developed a close working relationship with the LEARNER’s Trust, which has led to a range of sessions being provided to the Trust’s schools.
“I was looking for a franchise opportunity when I came across ComputerXplorers,” Martin said. “And we haven’t looked back since. It’s a great way of being able to work whilst flexing around our lifestyle and a great way of using our skills and experience to really grow the business and make it work for both us and our students.”
