Meet The Teacher Swapping Planning For Slime!

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Edd Gorton is a primary school teacher who is based in Exeter and has worked in schools across Devon. Like many teachers, Edd absolutely loves working with children and is very well respected in his field. Edd also loves the long holidays and flexibility that teaching gives him, meaning he has time to spend with his young family. However, like a lot of teachers, Edd was looking for a new challenge with more time spent engaging children and less time spent planning and marking.

In his search for something a bit different, Edd came across Fun Science – a low cost franchise opportunity that gives branch owners the chance to start their own business with very little business know-how and absolutely no business experience.

Fun Science branch owners run science themed birthday parties, workshops, after school clubs and holiday clubs. Because Fun Science offers lesson plans and risk assessments, there is no need for any planning and no targets to reach except the most important target of ensuring children are having fun whilst learning naturally.

Fun Science has branch owners from a range of different fields including acting, further education and some branch owners who have taken on their own business straight out of university but Edd is certainly not the first teacher to swap the classroom for rockets and robot building!

Another ex-teacher, Martin, was working as head of science in a secondary school before making the decision to start up his own Fun Science branch. The main reason behind this change was to seize the opportunity to be his own boss in a business that was still educational whilst being fun and entertaining – ‘Edutaining’.

Martin started Fun Science Cheshire in June 2015 and now he runs clubs in 18 schools on a rotation basis, with more schools currently on his waiting list, as well as parties and workshops in Cheshire and surrounding areas.

Martin fits running his branch around his 4 children who are now aged 12, 10, and 8 and 7. Martin’s favourite thing about running his branch is everyday is full-on, fun and flexible and fabulous feedback from parents, school staff, other adults and most importantly the children enriched by the Fun Science session!

Edd still has a couple of terms of teaching to go before his branch, Fun Science Exeter, launches on the 23rd May 2020 but Fun Science are busy behind the scenes getting the word out about his branch so that he is able to start earning money from day one.
